The 53rd Hour

My parents divorced when I was 12, and not being around me and my siblings tore my Dad up for the rest of his life. After seeing this short, but powerful video, "The 53rd Hour," I get a sense of how he must have felt. I don’t ever want to know this feeling, and wouldn’t wish it on anyone. However, this Dad, Jason van Genderen, has made some beautiful, if bittersweet, lemonade from his painful situation.

That he is able to find beauty in moments that usually provoke my ire—pajamas left on the floor, food left on the table—makes me feel embarrassed. This is a nice reminder that maybe we (okay, I) need to relax, and let kids live their messy and magical lives.
