Michael Witri is a solid man. For the past 26 years, he’s been teaching woodworking at the Green Meadow Waldorf School in Chestnut Ridge, NY. It’s fitting; he’s built like an oak. He works the wood with his hands, and the students with his spirit (and his booming baritone voice--he used to be a professional opera singer). Woe to the kid who steps out of line in his class.

We got Michael, himself a Dad, to channel his hands, spirit and voice into the creation of this handsome Zebrawood* Bottle Opener, exclusively for Army of Dads. This hardwood beauty is hand-cut, sanded and finished with Danish wood oil by Michael himself. It feels good in your hand. Smooth and sturdy. Solid and reliable.

It takes Michael a fair amount of time and focus to make each Zebrawood Bottle Opener, so there are only a limited number available right now. Sure, if these sell out, he’ll make more, but it may be a while before they’re ready, and haven’t you lived without a Zebrawood Bottle Opener long enough?

$17.00 plus shipping and sales tax.

* Zebrawood from Africa is listed as “Vulnerable” by IUCN (a step down from “Endangered,” and two from “Critically Endangered”). The other principle endangered materials organization, CITES, does not even list Zebrawood at all. The Zebrawood in our bottle openers comes from Honduras, not Africa. Michael bought it over ten years ago, long before there were any issues surrounding it. Moving forward, we’ll continue to ensure that any wood we use is sustainably harvested, and when possible, FSC-certified.
